SUGGESTIONS TO IMPROVE YOUR TEEN’S DRIVING EXPERIENCE

Level 1 (Parking Lot): Practice right and left turns until your student is at ease with handling the steering wheel. Encourage PUSH-PULL-STEER or hand-over-hand steering and keeping two hands on the wheel at all times. Your student will need practice making smooth starts and stops. Finally, Have your child practice driving in reverse; although 95% of driving is forward, going backwards is an important skill that needs to be mastered. Being able to drive confidently in reverse will help your child in parallel parking. The following are some reverse driving drills you can practice in a parking lot:

1. Back straight staying between the yellow parking lanes.
2. Make a 90 degree reverse right turn into a parking space
3. Make a 90 degree reverse left turn into a parking space.
4. In reverse, snake to the right and left staying between the yellow parking lanes.
5. Figure eights in reverse.

Level 2 (Low traffic environment): Once both you and your child are relaxed, comfortable with the driving situation and confident in Level 1 you are ready to practice some of the same maneuvers in a low traffic environment. A residential area with little or no traffic or pedestrians. Practice right and left turns, smooth starts and stops.

Level 3 (Semi-traffic conditions): The main thing at this level of driving is a good following distance; this can not be overstressed! Continue with turns, including U-turns, 2-point and 3-point turns, gradual lane changes, and parking parallel (use 1 car), perpendicular and angle. When both you and your child are relaxed, comfortable and Confident you are ready to proceed to the next level.

Level 4 (Highway driving):  Find a semi-low density traffic situation, no rush hour traffic. Jefferson Davis Hwy Route 1 may be one highway to use. Build up to speed and remember no quick maneuvers! Maintain a good following distance. Learn to maintain and drive at a higher speed.

Level 5 (Interstate driving): Don’t rush this! Learning to make a good entry on the interstate (I-95) is one of the most important and difficult skills perfect. Your child needs to learn to get up to speed and go with the flow; remember going too slow and not merging properly can cause a negative chain reaction.

Students are required to complete a 40 Hour Driving Log (10 hours must be after sunset); which a parent or legal guardian must acknowledge with signature. They must complete all required sessions. It is the responsibility of the student to study for their driving test, and they are encouraged to read and review the Virginia Driver’s Manual. Parents are also encouraged to become a part of their son or daughter’s driving experience studying the Virginia Driver’s Manual with your child, reviewing for the test, and making sure your child has ample on-road experience before being allowed to drive alone or with friends.

Knowing the rules is not enough, please always drive defensively!!!
